Miles Griffin is the founder and primary instructor of CHESSQUARES, an independent chess instruction service designed for players of all ages and skill levels.

As a frequent tournament player with a USCF rating over 2000, Miles is a National Expert of the game and has extensive experience in over-the-board competitions. He also enjoys casual play, and his blitz rating on Chess.com typically ranges from 2200 to 2350.

Miles' coaching philosophy focuses on the skills that translate into long-term growth: board visualization, tactical awareness, strategic understanding, and decision-making.

He takes a patient, structured approach designed to meet students exactly where they are so the process of improvement feels both achievable and enjoyable.

SINGLE SESSIONS

Standard Session

A personalized chess lesson for a player of any age and skill level. The session will be tailored to your current ability and goals. Whether you're a novice or an active tournament player, we will work with you to ensure an enjoyable experience.

Double Session

(2 hours)

$60/hr

Chess is a complicated game that takes a significant amount of time to learn, understand, and master. This option is designed for students who have a long attention span and want to improve quickly—ideal for competitive tournament players.

Monthly Package

(1-2 hours x 4-8 sessions)

This package option is designed for students seeking to reserve time slots for regularly-occurring lessons. For younger students, this is ideal for an after-school activity. For those already out of school, consistency is the key to improvement. Single and Double Sessions are available on a weekly or twice-weekly basis.

12-Session Package

(1-2 hours x 12 sessions)

$55/hr

Creating a plan and thinking ahead are valuable skills in chess! For a discounted rate, enjoy 12 Single or Double Sessions with the option to schedule up to 3 times per week. Tailor your package to range from a full season of weekly 1-hour lessons to a month-long intensive of 2-hour classes meeting 3x per week.

National Chess Expert

The first big news of 2026 for CHESSQUARES!

This past weekend, Miles participated in the U2100 section at the Boston Chess Congress, where he scored 4/5 (3 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses) and achieved a performance rating of over 2100.

With this result, he gained 29 points to reach a new peak rating of 2013. By breaking the 2000 barrier for the first time, he has officially earned the National Chess Expert title and made great progress toward his ultimate goal of becoming a master player!

US Amateur Team East

In February of 2025, Miles played on Board 3 alongside friends from high school and college, and their team scored 5/6 overall. They were the lowest-rated team to achieve this score, meaning they significantly over-performed expectations. USATE is a 6-round team tournament which takes place every year in mid-February. A team consists of 4 players, and the winner of a match must score a majority of the available points across the 4 boards. Miles has played at USATE nearly every year since 9th grade.
